SPORTS CARNIVAL,
Nothing is talked of here and in the .surrounding districts but the coming Carnival. The tug-of-war batween Matapouri and Whananaki promises to be something to be remembered, both sides being very confident. About 15 &tone will be the average weight of the men on both sides. The head teachers having protested against a cash prize in the Public Schools event, the Carnival Committee, have decided that it be optional with the winners whether they take coin or a trophy. In the event of a trophy being selected, the cash will be handed to the head of the winner's school to purchase whatever is chosen. That politics will be a part of the Carnival is pretty certain, the secretary having already been notified by sitting member and other candidates for the seat at the next election that <hey intend meeting the settlers on the grounds. This is a very thoughtiul step on their part, for this will be about the only chance, on account of bad roads, that they will have of meeting the men of the coast before next election. Given a fine day the Committee expect quite 1000 people to be present.
