COMMUTED DEATH PENALTIES.
IMPRISONMENT INSISTED ON,
SYDNEY, Feb. 22 (Received Feb. 22, 11.5 a.m.)
Mr Holman, in explaining Cabinet's attitude in refusing three petitions for the release of prisoners who had served portion of sentences after havt-ig death sentences commuted, said that if the desire was to have the death penalty inflicted as rarely as possible, ministers were under an obligation to see that sentences of imprisonment were carried out; otherwise the public would insist on death.
