BRITISH FINANCIAL ASPECT.

£12,700,000 FOR OLD AGE PENSIONS. MODIFIED LICENSE DUTIES. (Received Feb. 22, 10.22 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 21. Mr Hobhouse, on behalf of Mr LloydGeorge, reviewed the financial resolutions connected with the Budget. The Government proposed to pay the whole of the old age pensions, which would soon reach twelve miliion seven hundred thousand sterling. The Government considered that portion should be borne by the ratepayers and therefore intended to retain half the land taxes. Local authorities would be relieved of paupers to the extent of £2,000,000.

Education authorities would be granted £1,384,000 annually, instead of depending upon the fluctuation of the whisky duties.

Provision would be made to prevent lessors passing the increment tax on to lesses, while the license duties would be modified in conformity with the recent judgment.
