SUPPLY OF STEEL PIPES.
GERMAN TENDER DISAPPROVED,
MELBOURNE, Feb. 21
A deputation from the Chamber of to the Postmaster-C-oneral protested against the acceptance of the German tender for steel pipes in preference to Australian castiron pipes. They argued that if Australia u'er? granted th<> same labor conditions as Germany the'"ideal tenders would bo very different. If Germany continues building Dreadnoughts, Australian money should not help.
Mr Thomas, replying, said that preference of fifteen per centum had been added to the customs duties in considering the tenders. The imported article suited better, and also meant 'the saving of a thousand pounds. It seemed to him that there was only one course open. . ~-''■
