LOCAL AND GENERAL.

On the certificates of Drs. Good and Baxter, a mentally deranged man was committed by Messrs Briggs and Hutchings, J.'sP., to Avondale Mental Hospital this morning. The war between the grocers is still raging, and with a big special advertisement in to-day's issue Mr R. Frodsham calls attention to his "under cost" prices for cash. Prize-winners at the Floral Fete will be able to obtain their prices on application to Mr W. A. Parker, and it is desired that they should be called for as soon as possible. The Lux Light Company, Auckland., invite burners of kerosene to bring their lamp founts to them and have a "Lux" burner fitted. Visitors to Auckland should take their lamps down as a "Lux" burner saves fully 60 per cent of kerosene. Yesterday's spring tide was the highest that has been known in Whangarei for some considerable period At its full height it went almost across the Parua Bay road, while all the low-lying flat beyond Griffin's stables was under water, and it was impossible for pedestrians to approach the Swing Bridge without getting wet-footed. There was another very high tide this morning, but it did not quite reach the height of yesterday's, although Reyburn's road was half submerged.

Mr Eustace Lane, the representative of the Crown tenants on the Hawke's Bay Land Board, has announced himself as a candidate for the Hawke's Bay seat at the next election. He will stand in the interests of the Independent Labor party.

The fame of the Rev. Jasper Calder riding buekjumpers in Whangarei has reached England, and the Birmingham "Weekly Mercury" prints a paragraph clipped from a New Zealand paper detailing the rev. gentleman's exploits at Jones' buckjumping circus. At the last meeting of the Te Kopuru School Committee the headmaster stated "he was pleased to report there were four pupils in Te Kopuru school who had an unbroken record or eight years' attendance. The committee were requested to ask the Education Board to suitably recognise such splendid records.

Among local oarsmen the opinion is freely and frequently expressed that the southern crews coming up to the Harbor Regatta on January 2nd will have to send very good heavy-weight maidens and light weight junior crews to vanquish the local clubs representatives in these two divisions. Judging by their work whilst training there is every reason to believe that the common opinion will become fact, and that not all the rowing prizes will leave the district. A number of entries have already been handed in to Mr Jack and he has received others from Auckland, so that as the entries do not close until Wednesday, there is an auspicious probability of a full programme.
