THE HINE INQUIRY.
CHARGES AGAINST MR KAIHAU.
EVIDENCE OF MONEY RECEIVED. WELLINGTON, Nov. 18. The Hine inquiry resumed yesterday. Mr J. McCluggage said that he asked Sir Joseph Ward twice to speak at Stratford during the last election campaign, but Sir Joseph Ward declined until the charge against Mr Symes re petitions had been cleared up. The Committee then took the Kaihau Keritoke Teahu, who acted as agent for Mohi Te Waru, produced the following telegram from Mr Kaihau. "Send me petition and money, else too late." Witness sent both. Witness produced a telegram from Mr Kaihau acknowledging receipt of the petition and money, and another asking for £5, which was sent (registration receipt produced).
Replying to Sir J. G. Ward, witness said that during the last election he telegraphed to Mr Mgata asking if petitions had to be paid for, Mr Ngata replying that it was wrong for members of Parliament to receive payment for presenting petitions. Witness intended contesting the Northern Maori district next election.
Rewata Hiriako and.Kaahu Huatare deposed to paying £25 and £10 respectively to Mr Kaihau for presenting petitions. Te Kamanomano said that Mr Kaihau gave him £10 towards the expenses of a Maori meeting and £5 when witness' cliild died, witness promising to repay when able. When thy petition in Manuaitu, Aotea South, was drawn up, witness gave Kaihau £10 to pay for a search of the Court books. When witness was in Wellington in 1905 Mr Kaihau paid witness' board for some weeks.
This closed Mr Hine's case against Mr Kaihau.
Mr Myers mentioned that the only witness now to call was Mr Gvilfin, who would appear to-morrow in vhe Plaxbourne charge.
