STATE COLLIERIES.
HIGH PERCENTAGE OF ACCIDENTS.
SEVERE CENSURE.
CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. JS
The "Maoriland Worker,' the organ of the New Zealand Federation of Labor and the Shearers' Union, in its current number publishes an article on the State collieries, showing that 200 men were injured in two years and 85 in 1910. It urges the need of hospital and ambulance appliances, and the establishment of a cottage hospital at Point Elizabeth. The article alleges that nothing has been done to remedy the insanitary conditions in the mines, which are described as abonimable. It urges that the law applying to quartz miner, be made applicable to coal mines. The town of Runanga has no drainage system, water supply, or lighting. With regard to the management of the mine, it is alleged that there is still grave danger of flooding, owing to the inadequacy of pumping out.
