The monthly meeting of the Mutual Improvement Society was held on the 17th inst., when Mr Tilley, senr., presided, and the evening was devoted to the poet Longfellow. Master P Day was elected a member of the society. Mr Blair was appointed to have charge of the elocution evening on 15th October. It was resolved to hold a promenade concert in November to close the session. The following programme was submitted: —< "Sketch of Longfellow's Life, etc.", Mr A. Wilson; "The Wreck of the Hesperus," Mr Blair; "The Slave's Dream," Mrs Hodge; "Evangeline," Miss Archibald; "Flowers," Miss K. Hutchings; "The Reaper and the Flowers," Mr E. Tremaine; "Psalm of Life," Mr Wilson; "Village Blacksmith," Mr F. Yates; "Resignation," Mr E. Tremaine: "Excelsior," Mr Lilley; "The Bridge," Mr Blair.
