LYTTELTON HARBOR BOARD.

THE SUPPORT OF LOCAL INDUSTRY

CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 19

At a meeting of the Lyttelton Harbor Board this morning the engineer, now in Europe, recommended the acceptance of the tender of Symonds and Co. (£38,000) for the construction of a Freehling dredge.

The report gave rise to a discussion on the matter of the support of colonial industries. Mr Russell, M.P., strongly urged that inquiries be m.\de in New Zealand to ascertain whether the work could be done locally.

Mr Taylor, M.P., and other members endorsed Mr Russell's sentiments, but the opinion was expressed that no local firm would be likely to put down the plant necessary to construct the dredge. It paid to capital on plant for locomotives, oecause repeat orders were to be expected, but in the case of dredgos, there was little prospect of keeping the plant employed.
