Congested Port
SITUATION TO-DAY
DIFFICULT TO CATCH UP ON THE WORK.
Though cargo working.operations os the waterfront are proceeding with great briskness, there is a« yet no immediate prospect of overtaking the accumulation of work in the port. Deep-sea vessels are coming in faster than they can at present Be despatched- ' .j •xWithout taking, into consideration the smaller vessels, the situation at present with regard to the working of oversea, vessels at Wellington is summarised by stating that there are now five Homo liner 3 working cargo, three big boats in the stream vaitmg for berths, and seven more deep-sea vessels to arrive next week to work cargo at this port. The Union Company's and HuddartParker's Auckland Dunedin passenger artd cargo service, which ■ means _ three vessels passing through Wellington weekly, is still suspended, the Sydney cargo service is in a similar plight, the Wellington-Wost Coast passenger service is blocked, t-hft cargo service from southern ports has nos yet re-oorfl-menced, while the coal trade from the West Coast -is still held tip. CHANGES OF CBEAV. , Tho "greenness" of tho crews offering at present is resulting in frequent change;?, the work proving less congenial than was anticipated. As many as fourteen men left one vessel yesterday. .. A. number of coastal vessels aro still detained at Wellington owing to inability to obtain a full crew. The new men do not include a sufficient number of seamen who have had experience, while those who go into the stokehold soor. desire a change. The .position is .not improving iv this respect, and much dilu.v is occasioned in ceUinc transhipments away. -N.Z "Times" (2].11.13). [They tell the truth by accident occasionally.l
