FLAX-MILL WORKERS.
A deputation of the Manawatu FLnxmill Workers' "Union waited on the Now Zealand Flax-millers' Association executive last week, to lay before it a resolution carried at a special meeting of the union about six weeks ago, pointing out that the present system of paddocking by piecework was inequitable in regard to wages paid and earned. By tbe present system one individual or more obtained the work and employed one or two assistants at day wages. These assistants performed equal work to the man who took the pieeo contract, yet while Hie latter made from twenty to twenty-five shillings per day he only p:\id his assistants nine or ten shillings per day. The deputation asked that not less than two men share in tho piecework for each stripper running, with special provision for every mill where more than two strippers wore operated. In reply the president did nob give any guarantee that the request would be granted. The request of tho "Union tliat a day off be granted on July 27th, owing to an important Union meeting, was conceded.
