Eighteen girls of Va-sard, Transylvania, were drowned in the River Aluta last month. There is a local tradition that any young woman who bathes in the river at midnight will be married before the year hae expired. Twenty young women of the town, desirous of obtaining husbands, went at the- appointed time to bathe. The current was very strong, and swept the girls away, only two being saved.
