CUR!DUE ‘COUNTRY CLUB’ CAIbL. CON MOTIONS ENTERED. Christchurch, October 23. Convicted on each of six charges of Sunday trading, Douglas Palmer Claridge, ihc proprietor ul Claridge's Country Ciuo, was lined a total of £ls and costs in the Police Court this morning. In his reserved judgment the Magistrate (Mr Mosley) described Claridge s premises as an “alleged dub,” and said he did not attach any legal importance fo the allegations that it was a dub. Mr Mosley said he considered that Claridge, by providing an entertainment show on Sundays was transacting his business within the meaning of the Ad, Claridge was charged on six counts with keeping an open house (known as Claridge’s Country Club) on different Sundays for the purpose of transacting business, and the case was heard on October 11, The Magistrate added: “It is noticed that the alleged rules of the club d'o not appear to ever have been adopted. No mention is made of their adoption in the minutes of the meeting taken on August 31, 1933, being the date oi thoir alleged adoption. The minutes as taken, do not appear tc bo a proper record of the proceedings, It is also noticed that an alleged member of the club may take in three male visitors, together with their partners, a®l these visitors indulge in dancing, drinking liquor, and the consumption of refreshments.”
