Women’s Institutes

APITI. There was a very good attendance for the August meeting which featured an attractive displav of articles sent home from various Pacific islands by Capt. J. R. Osborne. There were mats and baskets of many patterns, pillows, fans and native costumes with bracelets, necklets, and head and ankle bands of varicoloured shells all most artistically made. A model of an outrigger canoe was particularly interesting. The president, Mrs. W. M. Duncan, thanked Mrs. Osborne for arranging the display. Mesdames Jacob Senr. and M. Jacob, who have left the district to reside in Turakina, sent their resignations and thanks to the W.I. for the parting gifts of fiowers and good wishes. The basketball club secretary sent a letter of thanks for the loan of W.I. decorations Tor their recent dance. Members decided to send a parcel of soap to the English pen friend Institute Send in Surrey. Mesdames Stanley and White will pack the parcels and cakes of toilet soap may be left with them. The roll call “Did you know that —?" biought forth surprising and humorous answers. Mrs. Watkins read the Dominion president's letter. Competitions for next month will be for best sugar bag article and child's garment, something new from old, vase of spring blossom and best bloom. Mrs. Gavin Brooke-Co.x, a recent bride was presented with a W.I. cookery book with good wishes from the members. Mesdames L. A. Martin, S. M. Stanley and S. 11. White served afternoon tea and arranged floral decorations of lily of the valley, primulas and jjoppies. Mesdames Churcher and G. Brooke-Cox judged the competitions as follows: Date loaf (Mrs. McNicol's prize), Mrs McNicol 1, Mrs Simpson 2 awarded prize, Mrs Munro 3. Decora-, live, small vase (Mrs J. R. Osborne's prize), Mrs T. Nix 1, Mrs JL. Martin 2, Mrs. Munro 3; bloom, Mrs. W. Hogan 1, Mrs Munro, 2 and 3. Birthday buttonholes were x>resented to Mesdames E. H. Clifton, D. Martin, D. McNicol, J. I?. Osborne, T. Nix. NIEEAHA. Mrs. Petersen presided over a good attendance in August. Birthday sprays were presented to three members, Mrs. W. Drysdale, Mrs Thomasen and Miss P. Mason. The motto was read by Mrs. Golder. Three letters of thanks were received from boys overseas for biscuits sent to them by the Institute. During the meeting three unaddressed parcels were packed. Competitions resulted:— Three fiowors, Mrs. Hawkins I, Mrs. W. Drysdale 2, Mrs. J. Petersen 3j bloom, Mrs. W. Drysdale and Mrs Petersen 1; vegetable, Mrs. Hawkins I, Mrs. W. Drysdale 2; date scones, Mrs Mason and Mrs. Thomasen I, Mrs Terry 2, Mrs Hawkins 3; jam tarts (juniors), Miss Terry I, Miss Thomasen 2, Miss Petersen 3; peggy squares, Mrs Thomasen 1, Mrs. W. Drysdale 2, Miss Mason 3. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs. Golder and Miss Petersen. LINTON. Mrs. Dale presided in August. A roll call on ekeing out your rations, brought forward some very helpful hints. After the serving of afternoon tea, Mr. Hunt, welfare oriicer of Palmerston North, gave a very interesting talk on child welfare work, Mrs. Ralph returned a vote of thanks to Mr. Hunt. Arrangements were made for the birthday dance to be held in September. Competitions resulted: Knitted garment, Mrs. J. irvine I, Mrs. Kilsby 2, Miss Young 3; flowers, single bloom, Mrs. Mullins 1, Mrs. Marsh and Mrs Higkt equal 2, Mrs. Gilliland 3; cluster, Mrs. Collis 1, Miss Young 2, Mrs. Nash 3; shrub, Mrs. Curry I, Miss Young 2, Mrs. Mullins 3. TAQNUI. At the August meeting Mrs. H. Heys presided ana welcomed Mrs. Murray as a new member. It was agreed to -donate fat for Britain and also to purchase a flannel shirt tor Polish boys. The competition ‘ 1 Something new from something old" was won by Mrs. McLeod witn Mrs. H. Heys 2nd and Mrs. Maegaard 3rd, and the bloom by Mrs. ±L Jetreries I, and Mrs G. Jefferies 2. Seven parcels of clothing wore collected tor Unrra. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Allen and Marsden.
