England Prepares To Celebrate
Received Sunday 8.50 p.m. LONDON, August 12. In England the Home Office circularising the municipal authorities advised that arrangements for the celebration of the termination of hostilities should generally follow those recommended for VE day and suggested that local authorities arrange to provide bands, light bonfires and take other appropriate means of celebrating the historic occasion. It is hoped that the churches will be able to arrange for bells to be rung throughout the country. Workmen on Saturday were installing loudspeakers outside Buckingham Pal ace and the Mansion House, in Trafalgar Square and other public places. A Ministry of Works official stated that they were intended for announcements to the crowds which were expected within the next few days. Mr. Attlee and Mr. Bevin spent all last night consulting the Allies, epsecialiy the Dominions, regarding the reply to the Japanese surrender offer, says the Exchange Telegraph’s diplomatic correspondent. It is understood that Australia’s expression of disapproval at not having been previously consulted has now been satisfied by the tenor of the Allied reply.
