Churchill’s Triumphal Drive on Top of Car

LONDON, May 9. Squatting on top of . a motor-car, hanging on with one hand and waving his hat with the other, Mr. Churchill; made a triumphal drive down Whitehall to-night. It had long been expected that he would appear, and police formed a narrow lane from Downing Street to the foot of Whitehall. It was a quiet and orderly crowd until Mr. Churchill came out of No. 10 and scrambled on top of the car. Then the crowd went mad. They cheered and rushed forward. The police were swept aside. The car with Mr. Churchill sitting aloft, happy and serene, moved down Whitehall at a walking pace. Almost every part of it was hidden by uniformed and plain-clothes police, hanging on as a bodyguard, but they were helpless.
