Manhunt by Police

Just before dark on Saturday a party of Napier police, engaged in a manhunt in the Tarawera district, on the NapierTaupo Road, located two men who were arrested without resistance. The hunt had lasted from Friday morning. Very heavy rain was encountered during the search, which ended with the men being discovered huddled on cement bags under thick ti-tree. Both were wet through, exhausted and famished. Police action in isolating the area by guarding two bridges blocked the only outlets, as the rivers were too strong to be forded without aid. In an effort to divert the pursuers, a fox terrier had been tied to some bushes and the men had discarded their packs and heavy outer clothing. One had worn his socks through, and to save his feet had torn the sleeves from his shirt" to replace the socks. After their capture, the men were taken to the Tarawera Hotel, where they were warmed by bathing in a mineral bath and given food and dry clothing. Subsequently Francis Rui Gay and Clifton Halliday, dressed in heavy Army greatcoats, appeared before Mr. J. Miller, S.M., on a charge of unlawfully converting a car. They were remanded to appear again next Monday. Other charges were pending, an officer said, and a further remand might be necessary.
