Apiti

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The Marton Block branch of the W.D.F.U. met at the home of Mrs. C. McKay. Mrs. A. W. Viles presided and all present stood in silent sympathy with Mrs. Cockburn and Mrs. D. Symes. A new member welcomed was Mrs. R, L. Nicholson and visitors were Mrs. McClausland (Johnsonville) and Miss J. Jensen. Mrs. McKay was in charge of the bring and buy stall and the . successful result will aid the provincial community chest. Next meeting there will be a box lecture on the making of loose covers for furniture. Mrs. S. J. Martin will be the leader. Competitions will be for best bloom, three best bulbs and collection of six spring blooms. Invitations to Apiti W.I. and W.D.F.U. birthdays were received. Mrs. Nicholson won the social competition and the monthly competition prizes were as follow; Best bloom, Mrs. Vijes 1 and 2, Miss Jensen 3; children’s smocked garment, Mrs. W. Jensen 1, Mrs. C. McKay and Miss Jensen equal 2, Mrs. Martin 3; two needlework buttonholes, Mrs. Martin 1, Mrs. V H. Jensen 2, Miss R. Jensen 3. Mrs. McKay served afternoon tea. Mrs. W. J. Costello, of Palmerston has been visiting Mrs. D. McNicol. Mr. L. J. W. Foot, who has been driving the Apiti bus for the past three years, is shortly leaving Apiti to reside in Foxton. Mr. and Mrs. Foot and family will take with them the good wishes of their many Apiti friends. Master Peter Lockett met with an accident on Saturday when he cut a finger while trimming a fence batten with an axe. He had to visit the doctor and have the nasty cut stitched. Little Helen McKay, Mr. and Mrs. M. O. McKay’s 18 months’ old daughter, met with a painful accident on Saturday when she turned on a boiling water tap and badly scalded her foot, leg and hand. Tho unfortunate little girl is now in the Feilding hospital and everyone will sympathise with her parents in their anxiety. Church services were well attended in Apiti on Sunday by residents who observed the Day of Prayer. Members of the Presbyterian Church donated several dozen eggs for the orphanages in Wellington.
