Allied Nations’ Production Requirements
Received Tuesday, 9.20 p.m. WASHINGTON, Sept. 4. The British, American and Canadian Combined Production Resources Board reported that the Allies’ munitions output is almost quadruple the Axis output, but warned that the production of many strategic materials must be stopped up to meet the increasing combat and relief requirements. The forthcoming offensives will require larger and faster planes, improved electronic devices, landing craft, cargo vessels and heavy trucks.
Munitions production will reach its peak in 1944, in the latter period of which there is a prospect that Canada and America may increase their production of civilian goods. There is little likelihood of the United Kingdom’s easing its rationing until some time after Germany’s fall.
The Board reported critical shortages in coal, textiles, woodpulp, paper and medical supplies, but adequate supplies of machinetools, steel, copper, aluminium and magnesium. The Board said the three member nations will supply relief materials for the liberated areas on a cooperative basis. The shortages of coal and textiles will be aggravated as additional territory is liberated.
