District Rehabilitation

The fortnightly meeting of the Palmerston North District Rehabilitation Committee was held on Monday. Present: Mr. T. R. Lees (chairman), Miss E. E. Warburton, Hon. Rangi Mawliete, M.U.C., Messrs J. A. Brown, J. Hodgens, M.P., W. Hopcroft, A. W. Mewton, W. E. Winks, L. W. Cozens (District Rehabilitation Officer), E. H. Ferry (chief clerk). A report of all rehabilitation, activity up to July 31, 1944, dealing with the placement of 49,172 ex-servicemen and women returned from overseas and demobilised from home service, was received. The chairmen of suo-committees reported upon personal interviews with 39 applicants for farm grading, purchase ox homes, businesses, etc., and the recommendations made by tho sub-com-mittees were approved. The Rehabilitation Board advised the appointment of Mesdam.es Jaggard, Whyte, Nor they and Parkesto act as a Women’s Advisory Bub-Committee under the chairmanship of Miss Warburton to assist the district committee in all cases dealing with applications from ex-servieewowen, wives of prisoners of war, and widows of deceased exservicemen. The appointments were welcomed, and the chairman stated that the women’s advisory committee had already done excellent work in the commencement of a survey of the most urgent cases of housing for ex-service-men and their families. •An invitation was extended to the women’s advisory suo-committee to - meet the district committee at tlieir'next meeting. The district rehabilitation officer reported upon' h letter which had been forwarded to all'ldeal' bodies in the district, stating that it would be appreciated if they could see their way to appoint representatives to' meet the district rehabilitation committee to discuss opportunities for placing ex-servicemen in their employment, more particularly in. those departments where training for worth-while permanent employment can be assured. It was. decided to write to the Employers ’ Federation, Manufacturers ’ Federation, Senior and Junior Chamber of Commerce, Primary Production Council, and other organisations, asking for their cooperation and suggesting that a meeting between the district rehabilitation committee and representatives of those bodies would be of great advantage to the committee in absorption of ex-servicemen into civilian employment*
