Storm Damage In Pohangina County
Reporting to tho Pohangina County Council at its monthly meeting, the engineer (Mr. D. Watson) stated that a deluge of rain, the worst ever seen in the district, occurred recently in tho vicinity of Parsons Ford, where one bridge would have to be rebuilt and another, a concrete structure, repaired. In addition, several chains of new road would have to bo formed before two settlers could claim to have access to their property by any means other than on horseback. During the past month, to protect Coulter's Road (Mangaone riding) another concrete wall had been built and a concrete pipe culvert put in; to straighten the alignment of To Awa Creek, several cuts had been made and three stone groynes built, all of which should stop some of the erosion. The creek which crossed Coulter's Road had for some timo been filled with sand, with a consequent lack of outlet for the large volume of water. A channel had been partly formed with a bulldozer, which had improved the position. Cr. S. J. Strahan presided at the meeting. It was decided to co-operatc with the Manawatu-Oroua River Board in the scheme for the installation of rain gauges and flood warnings. In a statement showing the amount of rates collected, the clerk (Mr. L. J. Hagan) reported that of the £7SIG struck for the current financial year £7415 had been collected. This represented 98.6 per cent. Of the 1941-42 rates, the sum of Is 8d remained outstanding. Payments made for general maintenance, etc., for tho 11 months totalled £3BIB, which was a decrease of £514 on the corresponding figures for the previous year. The county fund account showed a credit of £1227.
