U.S. Ambassador’s Blunt Protest

(By Telegraph—Press Assn.— Copyright.) (Received Tuesday, 10.35 p.m.) MOSCOW, Mar. 9. Hitherto the Russian press has not acknowledges the national help they are receiving from America not only thiough Lease-Lend but also through the Red Cross, complained Admiral Standley (American Ambassador) at a conference of British and American correspondents. He said the Russian Red Cross had acknowledged this help but the acknowledgement was not published in the Russian press. “It is not fair to mislead Americans into giving millions and thinking they are aiding the Russian people and yet the Russian people do not know it.” Asked why he thought the Soviet authorities were rot informing the Soviet peoples Admiral Standley said: “They are seemingly trying to create the impression at home and abroad that they are fighting the war alone —they apparently desire to make out that they are fighting the war with their own resources rather than acknowledge help from anyone. '* Pointing out that a new Lease-Lend Bill is now before Congress, Admiral Standley added: “The American Congress is generous and big-hearted, but if you give the impression that their help means nothing there might be a different story.’ The official Soviet newspaper Pravda, warning against exaggerated optimism while a second front in Europe is nonexistent, says that the absence of a second front permits Germany to pour reserves into Russia from France, Holland and other areas. The Germans on the home front are feverishly and totally mobilising to create new armies to exact vengeance for their defeats.
