Black-bearded. Australian explorer Hubert Wilkins, who has travelled in 78 countries, seemed strangely out cf place behind a desk. The United States Government put him there — H 3 civilian consultant to tho Quartermaster Corps Research Development Branch on problems of polar, desert, and jungle war. Wilkins said recently, “I’m just an amateur.” But *b« amateur, in developing a soldier’s uniform for arctic war, left his desk. He went into a steel chamber, with temperature adjusted to below zero. Before an artificial snowbank he paced for hours in his self-designed uniform to see what protection it gave to au Arctic soldier on the march. Ho stretched himself out on the snowbank for two hours to test how a wounded soldier lying helpless, would fare iu the uniform. Explorer Wilkins also designed a uniform to give maximum comfort «n tho North African desert. There the temperature may be freezing at dawn and 100 degrees at noon. It is possible turbans may be worn by soldiers in tropical climates. Wilkins thinks this headgear is more than traditional and gives unusual protection in such weather conditions.
