Fire Destroys House

Yesterday afternoon about 2.45, fire completely destroyed a six-roomed house at Terrace End—No. 808 Main Street, occupied by ,r ”. aud Mrs. B. C. Watkins, and owned by Mr. H. G. Grover, Albert Street. Palmerston North. How the lire started is not known as Mr. and Mrs. Watkins were away for the afternoon and two children were away playing. When the fire brigade arrived, tho flames had a good hold on the building which was erected many years ago when shingles were used for rooling. As a matter ot fact, tho shingles were still there — under the iron roof and tinder dry. The whole of the furniture, some of which was new, was burnt and was not covered by insurance. A visiting Marine rushed into tho house aud retrieved a man’s suit and someone else hauled out u mattress, but that was all that was saved,
