Same Phases of Education
ME. E. BABY LOOKS.BACK Drawing liberally from bis experiences as a scholar, teaelier and headmaster, Mr. E. Bary, until recently headmaster of the Central {school, briefly outlined, at the Palmerston North Citizens’ Lunch Club’s weekly meeting yesterday, some of the trends in primary education during the past half-century. From being the “cramming-shop” of earlier years, the school had become in modern times a pleasant place, concerned principally with the building of the children’s characters and to encourage them to think for themselves. The transition from the school building, from which hardly a peep of the blue sky could be seen, to the modern openair building, encouraging freedom of movement and vision, was achieving wonderful results. Parallel with the development of improved methods ot teaching was the introduction of medical inspection and dental clinics to ensure the early detection of defects and the building of a healthier race. In conclusion, Mr. Bary referred to, the desirability of children making the best use of their leisure time, and in that connection mentioned the excellence of the reading matter for children of all ages at the children’s library. He was accorded a vote of thanks on the motion of the chairman, Mr. G. C. Petersen.
