Welcome Christmas Parcels
Members of the Palmerston North Little Theatre Society serving overseas have written to the Secretary (Mrs. V. E. Harman) recently, acknowledging receipt of welcome Christmas parcels. Lieut. Poland Allison now in command of the corvette H.M.S. “Glorinia” said his parcel was unusually welcome because his ship had just been sent to sea rather hurriedly in the middle of the night to go to the assistance of a vessel that had been torpedoed many miles away. They had nothing in the way of fresh provisions on board, only bully beef and biscufts, so that oysters, lambs tongues, etc. were doubly welcome. Warrant-Officer Malcolm Walker, of the Public Relations {Service, Middle East, mentioned that his parcel arrived in good order at an opportune moment, and C. R. Alfred Gorringe, of H.M.fS. “King Alfred’’ said ho thought Father Christmas had paid a visit and it was a “corker” surprise. Gorringe mentions that for the present he has finished with the sea and he had done nothing exciting only wandering round the Orkneys and Faroes looking for 11 subs. ’ ’ Some of his draft had quite a lot of action in Russian convoys, in Atlantic convoys, and in the “Broke” which charged the boom at Algiers. Others had been in Atlantic convoys, minesweepers and destroyers, while two had been in the Dieppe “stunt.” Now most of them including himself were on their wav through courses for promotion. Leave had been spent in Edinburgh and on a farm near Lincoln. He had also been in London and Cornwall. Two orchestral concerts had been enjoyed in London and Edinburgh.
