TRENTHAM CANDIDATES GO FAST AT AWAPUNI FLAGS WERE WIDE OUT YESTERDAY With Wellington Just over a week away, there was some fine work at Awapuni yesterday morning. The going was slow and the flags fifty feet out, but the times were good. Among those to catch the eye were Sir Bradbury, Caroline Bay, Happy Ending and Classforni, Gladynev and Rink, Damask and Stairway, and Screen. Sir Bradbury (S. Andrews) set the main over five when he came home solidly in 33 to complete in 1.5 2-5. He appears to be improving all the time. Screen (A. S. Ewan) worked over seven with the pace on only for the last three which she covered effortlessly in 38 3-5. Happy Ending (V. Sellars) and Classform (C. A. Bowry) look to be none the worse for their race at Stratford last Saturday. They were companions over seven. They ran the first four in 53 4-5 and the last three in 40 4-5, completing in 1.34 3-5. They were together at the finish and Happy Ending appeared to be going the better of the two. Nighean worked over seven, finishing strongly to run the last six in better than 1.23. Lady Spiral, with the saddle up on her neck at the finish, covered seven In I.3SJ. She looks well. Her stablemate, Lady Virginia, was given a working gallop over the same distance. Gladynev (Ewan) galloped a mile with Rink (C. A. Bowry) and with a lightweight in the saddle, appeared to be going better than his companion at the finish. They came home in 42 to complete in 1.515. Kaitoa (Ewan) and Damask (A. G. Waddell) set the early pace for Stairway (Bowry) over a mile and they ran the first five m 1.10. Then Stairway drew level and he was with Damask a length in front of Kaitoa at the post, the last three taking them 41 2-5 and the mile 1.52 3-5. Caroline Bay (Bowry) worked over about nine furlongs. She was going well when she passed the mile. From there she took 1.11 to reach the three. Then the pace was cracked on and she finished very smoothly, running the last three in 39 and the last mile in 1.50. She is very well at present. Working gallops were those of Alethea, Kanui te'Pai, Social Climber and Ramaiti. Among those restricted to pace work was Foxiana, who looks a picture. Flying Hawk (G. Bruce) worked alone over six in 1.24 2-5, maintaining an even pace throughout. Colerica (T. Paul) and Sea Quex (A. Midwood) finished together after five run in 1.7 2-5. A number of horses were schooled including Pay Roll (J. Fagan) and Lord Cavendish (E. Temperton), Circular Note (Temperton), Moderate (Fagan) and Renascor (Temperton), and Native Chief (Temperton). All of them went well. TARANAKI RIDING ENGAGEMENTS D. W. Redstone: War Effort, Flying Ace; S. Anderson: Cappy; A. Midwood: Killeymoon, Alchemy; A. G. Waddell: Alexcelia.
