Airs. C. Patterson, of “The Brow,” Waipukurau, who is the guest of Airs. R. H. Spencer, Carlton Avenue, returns to Hawke’s Bay to-morrow. Considerable success fell to Palmerston North players in the Dannevirke Croquet tournament this week. Mrs. L. Wood won the women’s championship singles and the open championship singles; and Alesdames J. Bingham and G. AlcDonald won the mixed championship doubles. Airs. W. McCarthy (Woodville) won the first section of the handicap singles. The death took place at Alanakau on Sunday of Mrs. Alice Elizabeth Tatum, widow of the late Major Charles Thomas Tatum, who died a few months ago. Airs. Tatum was 90 years of age and was a well-known figure in the Horowhenua district, having at Alanakau for very many years. She will be missed for her many acts of generosity. There were no children of the marriage. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. J‘. C. Davies. While Lady Nowall was visiting the Army Clothing Repair Depot in Alarion Street in Wellington on Wednesday, a rush order wes received for 200 pair of socks to be sorted ready for mending. Her Excellency expressed a desire to assist with this urgent work, and proved a most energetic and apt worker. The socks bad to go through a process of three sortings, first for colours, of which there are about six, then into those to be mended, those to be refooted, and afterwards into pairs. A meeting of the Parents’ Association of the Girls’ High School was held on Wednesday evening. Air. T. P. Hart was in the chair and othors present were Aliss E. E. Stephens (principal), Alesdames Feren, Howes, Barkwater, Jo-blin and Air. Spencer. *tx extra expenditure of four guineas on /i picture purchased for the school from the New Zealand Academy was approved. An interesting letter from Airs. Alurray Fuller was read dealing with the picture, a water colour, “Tree Ferns,” by T. A. AlcCormack, and with the girls’ visit to Wellington to see the exhibition last year. A trial balance, sheet was x-ead and discussed.
