P.N. Branch of League of Mothers

In the absence of the president (Mrs. J. Barsanti), Mrs. A. McPherson, a vicepresident, presided over the first meeting of the year of the Palmerston North branch of the League of Mothers and offered a welcome to members and visitors, particularly Mrs. Hills, vice-president of the Ngaio branch, who was asked to convey greetings from the meeting. In the absence of Mrs. E. W. Drake, (hon. secretary), the duties were undertaken by Mrs. Pascoe. Sympathy was voiced with Mrs. Barsanti, who is indisposed, also with Mrs. Ayres, the secretary to write expressing hopes for their speedy return to health. Appreciative letters were read from Miss L. M. Banks, Matron of the Palmerston North hospital, also from the Sister in charge, Emergency Hospital, for cakes, biscuits, sweets and cigarettes men of the forces in hospital over Christmas. In this regard, it was mentioned that Mrs. H. Finch had made 25£ dozen cakes and biscuits, the meeting according her an enthusiastic vote of thanks. Mrs. Finch reported on the hospital visiting to distribute the comforts and the chairman thanked the ladies, who had carried out this duty. Mrs. V. Stagpoole, a former member now in Christchurch, sent her usual greetings for the meeting. The transfer of Mrs. D. Millar, of Wlmkal rongo, an active member for a number of years, to Lyall Bay, Wellingtoh, was regretfully approved. Notice was given of “Husbands' ” evening in April instead of the usual meeting and hospital visitors were appointed also helpers for canteen duty at the showgrounds on April Ist. 2nd, and 3rd. As this was a “great day for the Irish” the items selected for entertainment were appropriate to the occasion. Mrs. W. Bigham played selections of Irish airs on the piano, Mesdames C. Procter and Bell contributed vocal duets; Mrs. Mclntyre, vocal solos; Cecily Penfold, Irish jig, and the choir, Irish airs, Mrs. Bigham being the accompanist. All's. K. Clarke was door hostess and the vote of thanks to the artists and hostesses was conveyed by Mrs. D. Dredge. The happy thought was given by Mrs. Procter.
