Magistrate’s Court

Mr. H. IJ.1 J . Lawry, S.M., presided at, a sitting of tht Magistrate’s Court iu Palmerston North on Wednesday. Robert Donald Calder, boilermaker, aged 42 years, was riynancled on a charge of stealing two tablecloths, four table napkins, three table centres, six boxes of toilet soap, six handkerchiefs, four pictures and a. suitcase, of a total value of £3 I9s. (id., the x ,ro P er ty of Olive May Walley. Bail was allowed. Maurice Norman Vile, lorry driver, aged 17 years, and Melvin .Smith, bacon curer, aged 20 years, were remanded for a week on a charge of breaking and entering the shop of Watson Bros., at the corner of Main and Ruahine Streets, and stealing 100 packets of cigarette papers, 122 packets of tobacco, 150 packets of cigarettes, one fountain pen, of a total value of £26 18s. 4d. SeniorDetective Meiklejohn stated that Smith and Vile were members of a gang which had been operating in the city and that

further charges would be preferred against them. Both rucu were allowed bail. Two More Youths Charged. Mr. T. R. Lees, J.P., presided at a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court in Palmerston North yesterday when Raymond Edward Mclntosh, mechanic and soldier, aged 19 years, and Henry Joseph Goater, labourer and soldier, aged 21 years, were charged with the breaking and entering of Watson Bros, shop and with the theft of £26 18s. 4d. worth jof goods. They too, at the request of Senior-Detective Meiklejohn, were remanded to appear next Wednesday. Bail was allowed in each case.
