French Possessions In Caribbean Sea
OVERTURES FROM UNITED STATES Received Monday, 12.40 a.m. WASHINGTON, May 10. The State Department announced that Admiral John Hoover, commander of the Caribbean Sea Front and a rep* presentative of the State Department, arrived at the French island of Martinique for the purpose of seeking an understanding with the French High Commissioner (Admiral Georges Robert) on the local problem presented by the French possessions in the Caribbean area following Laval’s collaboration with the Germans.
Admiral Hoover’s authorised purpose is an arrangement whereby the French flag may continue to be recognised as the ultimate governing authority in the French Caribbean possessions. “Should mutually satisfactory arrangements be reached with Admiral Robert assuring that the French authorities will not furnish aid comfort to Axis forces the United States is prepared to safeguard French interests in these areas, to maintain their economic life and also to assure that all the assets of the French Government the Caribbean possessions will be held for the ultimate use of the French people.”
