Ideal Cylinder Head Found By U.S.
NEW YORK, May 8. The Wright Aeronautical Corporation announced to-day, after five years of research, the production of a machine capable of forging a cylinder head instead of the present method of casting in sand.
The new forged cylinder head is twice as strong as the cast one, with a considerable increase in the cooling area, and weighs 31b less than the existing heads. The new engine reduced labour costs in terms of manpower. It gives a 35 per cent, increase in power without increase in weight. It is the ideal sought by the aviation industry since the beginning. The new engine weighs less than lib per horsepower and will give planes greater speed, load, range, and ceiling. It will also mean a faster and cheaper rate of production and free the muchneeded drop hammers for other essential purposes. A sensation in the art of metalcutting is the fact that the cut is made dry, without the use of cooling oil, and yet, despite this, heat is not developed. An operator can handle the finished part with his bare hands. Semi-mass production will begin shortly. Although developed exclusively by Wrights, the new technique will be made available to all other aircraftengine manufacturers.
