(From Our Own Correspondent.) Mr. R. R. Lind has been appointed to represent the Shannon Borough Council on the Horowhenua Bower Board, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of the late Mr. A. E. Hyde. Mr. A. Scmpie, until recently Postmaster at Shannon and now stationed at \vaipawa, paid a brief visit to Shannon tms week to look up old friends. Mr. Sempio was tne guest of Mr. and Mrs. W. narpur (N.Z.E.) during his visit. | Mr. and Mrs. E. Berry left on Tuesday's iNapier express xor Wellington, to catch tne inter-isiand rerry tne same night. They will be spending a fortnight's holiday in and udoui Christcnurch. Mr. V. Richards, a member of the Masterton fire Brigade staff, is spending his leave at Shannon. Mr. and Mrs. E. Thompson, Newtown, who have been residents oi for a number of years, ieit this week to make their home at Foxton. The November meeting of the Shannon branch of the Women's .Division of the Farmers' Union was attended by the following memoers: Mesaames L. H. Best (president), A. E. Buriing (secretary), j. V. Campbell, P. Cole, N. Macaulay, H. Easton, G. Munrord, (J. H. Speirs, (J. Guerin and W. R. Mullins. The business of the meeting was the discussion and arrangements for the dahlia show to be held in February. The fortnightly meeting of the Miranui Guild heid at the resiuence of Mrs. C. Guerin, .Kingston Road, was again well attended and a busy time was spent in unpicking coats in preparation to remaking them into children's coats. The guild would be grateful if still more discarded coats in fairly good condition were sent in. There is use for any number and anyone who can assist with these, would they please get iu touch) with Mrs. Guerin. Another largo parcel of knitted goods was sent to the Minesweepers’ Circle, Palmerston North. A letter was read from the United Guilds, Palmerston North, thanking the Miranui Guild for a parcel of clothes for refugee children. A letter creating considerable interest which was received by a guild member, Mrs. A. Cave, from Herbert A. Smith, coxswain of the small minesweeper H.M.S. Nettle, stated inter alia: 44 We are happy to know that our comfort and welfare is occupying the thoughts of unknown friends who are so many thousands of miles away and our hearts go out to them in gratitude.” This letter was dated September 9 and was written in thanks for a parcel received from the Miranui. The name of •Mrs. A. Cave was on a note packed with a cake. The competition for a gold satin cushion was won by Miss Aiieen Coley. The meeting concluded with the serving of afternoon tea by Mrs. Guerin. The second series in the first round < of the Horowhenua Cricket Championship will be played on Saturday next when tho following games will be I played:— Shannon v. Otaki at Otaki; Air Force v. Old Boys at Air Station; Weraroa v. Levin at Weraroa. A little over nine per cent, ahead of the nearest rival in the competition for the National Savings Flag, the Shannon district percentage has now reached 33.77. For the period ending 31/10/41, 14 new accounts were opened at the local office, while from the Ist of this month until Wednesday last, a further 50 accounts came in. Only half-way | through this week, the weekly quota of ! £93 was exceeded by a considerable amount, entitling the office to fly the newly acquired quota pennant, donated by Mrs. J. T. Bovis. As a matter of fact, on Wednesday, if three flag-poles | had been available, all would have been | in use as the office was entitled to fly ! three flags—the National Savings Flag, the pennant, and also a flag at half-mast to mark the passing of Lieut.
