Foxton
(From our own Lonespondent.) Mr. aud Mrs. W. Morrison, of Fiji, are on a brief visit to Foxton and axe staying with Mrs. J. Walls, of Main Street.
Mr. and Mrs. Manuel, of Avenue Road, have received advice that their son, Driver V. A. Manuel, who was recently reported missing idlowing hostilities in Greece, is a prisoner of war, Mr. A. Renwick, of l-oxfon, met with a severe injury to his left hand at Shannon on Monday evening as the result of tho accidental disenarge of a shotgun. He was admitted to the Palmerston North Hospital where his condition is reported to do satisfactory. For tho purpose of inspecting tne dwelling which the Palmerston North Hospital Board proposes to acquire for conversion into a maternity home for Foxton, Mr. Nordmeyer, Minister of Health, paid a visit to Foxton. Mr. Nordmeyer was accompanied by Mr. L. G. Lowry, M.P., ana the inspection was ma.de in company with the chairman of the local hospital committee, in connection with the cottage hospital Messrs. H. Podmore, D. Brooks and D. D. McKenzie, the deputation set up by the public meeting conferred with ! Mr. Low’ry at Otaki on matters concerning the hospital. Prize w’inners at the Labour Party euchre tournament, held in the Beach Hall, were:—Ladies, Mrs. Joe Smith 1, Mrs. Bald 2; men, Mr. A. Sands 1, Mr. N. Moore 2.
The chairman (Mr. H. A. Hannay) presided over the monthly meeting of the Foxton District High School Committee. A motion of sympathy with Mr. M. E. Perreau in his illness •was moved by the chairman. It was decided to have the grass in the playing area cut and a letterbox erocted at the school gate. It was decided to permit the Home Guard the use of the school at the discretion of the headmastei’. It was decided to complete the installation of concrete tubs for the washing of the milk bottles. It was decided to arrange for a parents’ day at the school in the near future. The headmaster submitted details of a scheme for providing a swimming pool at the school. The committee considered the suggestion a good one and it was decided to investigate ways and means of having a pool installed. Messrs. W. D. Neville and J. F. Riches were appointed visitors for the month.
A meeting of the committee members of the Foxton Horticultural Society was held at the residence of Airs. R. O. Hornblow (president). It was decided that the summer show be held on Tuesday, November 25. Arrangements were made to provide refreshments for visitors and others at tho hall.
Mr. R. O. Hornblow presided over a meeting of the Foxton Christmas Cheer Committee. The secretary (Mr. H. Robson) reported that 85 gifts had been despatched to local men serving overseas. The matter of decorating the business area for the festive season was discussed and it was left to Mr. McLaughlin to endeavour to arrange for a supply of flax for this purpose, Mr. W. D. Neville agreeing to supervise the placing of the decorations.
