Borough Tree-planting. In acordance with the Borough Council’s tree-planting scheme, materially assisted by the generosity of Mr. J. Gibbs, of Dannevirke, a numer of conifers are being planted in Fountaino Square and other borough reserves. A number of flowering plums have been purchased and these are for planting in Ross and Ormond Streets, the area to bo treated extending from Bowen to Station Streets. Profitable Heifer.
The rearing of eight lambs by a two-year-old heifer is an actual fact and happened on the farm of Mrs. Stanfield at Rua Ron. This heifer mothered the lambs as any beast would mother her own calf, and would go bellowing down the paddock for them if they had fed or strayed any distance from her. When the lambs were penned at drafting time she bellowed round the yard as any cow does when her calf is taken from’ her. As. soon as the first four were fed, the remaining four would take their place. These lambs were foster-mothered by the children of Mr. Sid Stanfield. Four of the lambs were sent to the freezing works in January and averaged 38.31 b., and the remaining four in February and averaged 381 b., every lamb being of first quality.
