Knick-Knack Club Plays its Part
USEFUL ACTIVITY FOR ! PATRIOTIC FUNDS “If you know a good thing, pass it on” is an excellent slogan that has been adopted by a group of patriotic women of Palmerston North styling themselves the “ Ivnick-knack’ y Club, whoso efforts have extended beyond anything that was dreamed of a few short months ago. The inspiration for the club came in April from Mrs. Hales Walker from an idea sent to her iroin across the Tasman, and no sooner was it mentioned to a few friends than tho club was an established fact with a membership of Id, comprising Mes-1 dames Hales Walker (president), G. Aekins (secretary), J. Richards, E. Y. j West, J. Rowntree, Hamilton, V. Hill, ' C. Ncilsen, Johnson, White, Croll, Campbell and L. Anstis. Being good needlewomen and knitters, they were banded to gether for the purpose of making unexpensivo knick-knacks to sell for patriotic funds. And so attractive aro the articles thep aro making that they are sold almost as soon as they are made. A brainwave from Mrs. Johnson to make “Victory” brooches of- felt brought immediate action, and already over £lO has been raised for the funds by this means, a competition conducted by Mrs. Beale adding another £5 together with sales making a total of over £26 in hand to date. The objective is now to service tho Patriotic Shop the first week in December, when the public
will have the opportunity of seeing the result of all this useful endeavour. Tho members meet each week at one another’s homes in turn, when refreshment provided is of the most simple, as befitting the times in which we are living. At the instigation of Mrs. G. Kenning, a junior group has now been formed, its members being Mesdames Kenning, W. Lewis, A. Burges, J. Walker, Burmeister, F. Bendall, Griffin, R. Ballinger and Reichenbach. Yesterday for tho first time the two groups met together at the home of Mrs. J. Richards, Boundary Road, when a “Times” representative was privileged to see something of the beautiful and useful work that is being accomplished by both groups. There were on view cleverly-fashioned soft toys, exquisite art silk needlework, daintily-smocked frocks, shoe and .string bags, needle books, slippers from felt hats, suede belts and appliqued bags, painted glassware, coat-hangers, sweet patchwork aprons, fancy articles in infinite variety and other attractive gifts too numerous to mention, most of which are made from new material.
There is much enthusiasm in tho tv groups and real enjoyment in the woi they are doing and nothing is mo: welcome than a new idea on which : work.
