The publicity given by the press to the aid sought by the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, to save from destruction by erosion an historic red gum at Orua Bay, Awhitu, has achieved the desired result. Air. G. W, Allsop, of Auckland, has informed the chairman of the Franklin County Council, Air. J. N. Alassey, ALP., that he has purchased several sections of Orua Bay, including the area on which the red gum tree stands. Mr. Allsop is undertaking the erection of a retaining wall along the beacti frontage and will replace some 200 yards of soil washed away from the roots of the tree.- Air. Parry said the tree was of historic value. The seed from which it had grown had been brought from Australia in 1836 by the Rev. James Ilamlin when he established the mission station at Orua Bay. “The fine public spirit displayed by Air. Allsop,” the Alinister added, “in coming to the rescue of the tree merits high commendation.”
