Small Coastal Steamer Stranded
WASHED BY WAVE ON TO ROCKS MASTER MAKES GOOD SAVE Per Press Association. WHAKATANE, June 30. Smart seamanship Avas shown by Caplain E. Cathcart, master of the Northern Company’s Toa, when he warped the vessel off the rocks where it stranded at (3 o’clock this morning after being caught by a Avave when leaving Whakalane for Auckland. A fair sea was running and the Toa, with the pilot launch, Avas in difficulties when a Avave caught them as the vessels SAVung in the narrow, rocky channel to head seawards. Lightly laden, the Toa became unmanageable, struck a rock and grounded on a shoal among a nest of reefs. Lines Avere laid out to the rocks and tho Toa Avas backed off after nine hours. The maiu damage was a broken propcllor, bent tailshaft and broken sheathing. The vessel is making no Avaler and will probably sail to Auckland w : th one engine under the e3iort of tho Otimai when that leaves.
