NEED FOR CAPABLE OFFICERS Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 28. me annual conierence of the Corps of Frontiersmen was opened by Commandant C. L. Martyn-Roberts, V.D., there being a full representation of delegates from both islands. The resignation of the commandant owing to advancing years was received with regret, and on his nomination ! Major Alan Smith, his staff officer, was | made commandant with the rank of j colonel. Commandant Martyn-Roberts j and Major A. N. Hardy were elected ] the two commissioners and also made life members. It was noted with satisfaction that the ! corps had several members who had j qualified under the defence authorities i as competent instructors in preventive j methods adopted against the use of | chemical gas in warfare. J It was stressed that annual examinaI tions for appointments and promotion : must be encouraged, as no appointments would be made of unqualified men. The result of the last examinations showed that the corps possessed capable officers, ad the hope was express ed that the same standard woul£ b# maintained in future. The commandant proposed that during Anzac Week next year a bivouac be held in Wellington during the exhibition.
