Japanese Seize Norwegian Ships

A Hongkong message says tnat Japanese warships are reported to have seized the Norwegian steamers Prosper and Promise, between Woosung and Foochow. On the Kiangsi front, after 24 hours’ severe fighting, the Chinese captured Tacheng. The Japanese are retreating northwards to Fensin. The Chinese, for two heavily bombed and machine-gunned Japanese troop concentrations and supplies at the Yangtse port of luling. A battle is raging for possession of Sunwui, north-west of Canton. The anti-British campaign at Nanking continues. Hundreds of cases of British cigarettes and other goods were publicly burned. The Daily Telegraph’s Hongkong correspondent states that Vice-Admiral Sir Percy Noble has placed naval guards on British ships trading at Hongkong, Hainan, Swatow, Amoy and Foochow. It is revealed that Japanese boarded the British vessel Siestan at Amoy, but were unable to seize her because of the presence of British naval men. Marshal Chiang Kai-shek’s personal adviser, an Australian, Mr W. H. Donald, is reported to be on his way to London secretly by air to confer with the British Government. The Canton Maru, with 200 soldiers aboard, arrived at Chungking from Formosa, bringing the officers and crew of the Sagres, the British ship which was confiscated while loading Government gold at Chuan Bay.
