The Art of Public Speaking

PALMERSTON NORTH LITERARY AND DEBATING SOCIETY The weekly meeting of the Palmerston North Literary and Debating Society was held in the club room on Wednesday evening. Mr. H. G. Mills was in the chair and the adjudicator was Mr. C. F. Spooner. The speakers in the “Magic Carpet” competition were Miss R. Bird, who described a visit to Stewart Island, Mr. R. G. Buchan (a Hawke’s Bay shearing shed), Mr. Richardson (tho human machine), Air. T. C. Watson (a day on Sydney Harbour), Airs. E. L. Christian (a schooner voyage). Speakers in a debate on whether or not tho Church has lost its influence, were Mrs. L. Bennett, and Mrs. M. Turner and Alessrs Ale Alley, A. J. King, A. C. Philpotts and Loudon. The S. A. Carlton medal for tho best speech in the debate was won by Airs. L. Benuott. Tho adjudicator complimented Airs. Bennett on her remarkably fine speech aud also commented ou the improvement shown by Air. H. J. King. The King Cup for tho best prepared speech was won by Air. T. C. Watson. Thanks were extended lo tho chairman and the adjudicator by Air. Watson. The dobate proved to be very interesting and a general discussiou W'as entered into upon the subject.
