Women’s Institutes

WHAKARONGO There was a good attendance at the -j April meeting. Mrs Morris, ex-presi-dent, welcomed Mrs Oxenham, the new president, for the coming year. The new committee for the year is as fol- I lows:—Vice presidents, Mesdames Frith : and Philips; secretary, Mrs E. L. Smith; < competition stewards, Mrs Fountain and I Mr 3 Cresswell; treasurer, Mrs Morgan; reporters, Misses W. Vautier and H. ’ Wood. The president welcomed all j visitors and apologies for absence were i received from Mesdames F. Smith, i Urhbom, Hastings, Clark and Harrow- ! field. The roll-call was “My Favourite 1 Flower.” The matter of having a Maori link was discussed and it was decided to proceed with the proposal. The 1 new programmes for the year were given and a “golden thread” item is to be conducted each month. During the course of the afternoon Mrs E. L. Smith gave a pianoforte solo which was much appreciated. Report on the gardening circle was given by Mrs Sly; drama club, Mrs Frith, and arts and crafts’ circle by Mrs Meyer. Wednesday next will be the monthly meeting for the arts and crafts circle. A demonstration on barbola work was kindly given by Mrs Olds, of Milson, and proved very interesting to the members. “The Best Bloom From Your Garden” competition was won as follows: —Married ladies, Mrs Fafeita 1, Mrs Askew and Mrs Closey equal 2; single ladies, Miss H. Wood 1, Miss W. Vautier 2; jar of mustard pickles, married ladies, Mrs Johansen 1, Mesdames F. Smith and A. Frith 2; single ladies, Miss W. Vautier 1. The competition for next meeting will be article of barbola work. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Philips, Wood, Creswell, Misses W. Vautier and H. Wood. SHANNON The president (Mrs J. A. Easton), presided over an attendance of 56 at the monthly meeting held last week. A visitor, Mrs Devereaux, from Balclutha, was welcomed. The following new members were proposed and heartily welcomed:—Mesdames E. Thorne, B. Mitchell, D. Higgie, E. Martin (Shannon) and F. Lucinsky (Moutoa). Apologies for absence were received from Mrs R. W. Taylor and Miss Barber (treasurer), also from Mrs Symons (Foxton) who was unable to come to give a demonstration on rugmaking. An invitation was received from the Tokomaru W.I. to attend their birthday party on the evening of May 9. Mrs A. E. Burling brought for in--3 spection a gas mask identical with * those recently issued in England. This J arrived in New Zealand last week. She mentioned that they were made in four sizes and were only good for gas, 3 being quite ineffective in a room full of smoke. Mr Cheesman’s talk on his trip 1 to Sydney was postponed until next 1 month on account of the lateness of the 1 hour. The competition for the best r bloom in my garden resulted as follows: 7 —Mrs Second 1, Miss Spring 2; Mr E. s Allen 3. Next month’s competitions 3 will be:—(1) Best bloom in my garden. L (2) Best hand-knitted child’s jersey " or cardigan. (3) Best suggestion to improve our institute. ; AWAHURI * A warm welcome was extended to 1 all, especially to the visitors, at the April meeting presided over by Mrs. Ilaythorne. The thought was: “If your 3 face wants to smile, let it; if it does not, make it.” Apologies were re- * eeived from Mesdames Rowlands and 1 Mair, while Mrs. Poananga was welcomed as a new member. Correspond- * ence was received from Rangiotu 1 Women’s Institute extending an invita--1 tion to their birthday dance; Whit--3 combe and Tombs, in connection with handcraft material; letters of apprecia--1 tion from the Institute for the Blind, s Mrs. Haythorne was asked to do a piece of barbola work for the centennial exhibit and also to forward her name as a demonstrator. As Mrs. Cole was unable to the federation meeting, Mrs. Nicholson was appointed as delegate. Mrs. E. O. Bond kindly B offered to look after the market stall. A very delightful talk was then given j by Mrs. Poananga on her recent trip j to America. A pianoforte solo was rendered by Miss Y. Bennett, while Mrs. Bigham sang two songs and Mrs. Bangay played several accordeon solos. 3 All performers were heartily applaud- : ed and thanked for their items. After--1 noon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames E. O. and A. Bond and H. 3 Port. It was decided to have a com- ' mittee on Tuesday, May 23. Also a t trip was arranged to visit the children’s health camp and Rasmussen’s 3 nursery at Wanganui on May 9, Mrs. t Bond being in charge of arranging J transport. The winners of the com- > petitions were: Flowers, Mrs. Oke 1, i Mrs. Nicholson 2, Mrs. Haythorne 3; 3 pikelets, Miss Mansou 1, Mrs. Nicholf: son 2. As the May meeting is to be r held in Feilding, members were asked E to bring a plate for afternoon tea. LONGBURN There was a fair attendance at the April meeting presided over by Mrs A. Pierard, who extended a welcome to visitors and friends. Apologies were 5 received from Mesdames Nicol, Young, I Riley, Cruden, and Sanson. A vote of ( sympathy was passed with Mrs young ( in the serious illness of her mother. , Mrs Somerset *would visit on the 27th r at a special afternoon, and it was decided to invite the members of Tiakita- | huna Institute. The flag 500 evenings would commence the last Wednesday of the month. During the month the seventh birthday was celebrated in the form of a dance which had proved very successful. A very pleasant and inter- . esting afternoon had been passed at Mr . Shailer’s misery. Mrs Fletcher was , competition steward and Mrs Swenson 5 in charge of produce table. Mrs Rowj land, “Home and Country.” The . monthly competition, for the best . bloom, was won by Mrs Young, Mrs » Nicol 2 and 3; while for the best worked . tea towel Mrs Nicol 1 with Mrs Cham- ) berlain 2, Mrs Holland 3. The com* i petitions for next month will be best i bloom, plain scones, and minature garl den. There will be a demonstration of * feltex bags and sulphured apples. Mrs t Fletcher will give the motto. Chamberlain and Holland. An amusing competition was won by Miss Shortland. BUNNYTHORPE The prevalence of sickness depleted the attendance of members at the April meeting, which was presided over by Mrs. Abraham; Mrs. Jackson, our president, who was ill, was wished a speedy recovery. Apologies were also received from Mesdames Armstrong, Cundy and Guy. Funds are being raised to assist our Maori institutes. During the afternoon Mrs. Haythorne gave an interesting demonstration on crayon embroidery, exhibiting several pieces of this art. This followed by floral work, which included bridal sheafs, presentation bouquets and wreaths. The golden thread talk given by Mrs. Tomlinson was a description of a holiday spent in the Nelson and Murchison districts, each feature being illustrated with camera snapshots. Best bloom competition resulted: Mrs. Guard 1, Miss O. Sinclair 2, Miss J. Sinclair 3; posy of weeds, Mrs. H. Jefferies 1, Mrs. G. Jefferies 2. Members were asked to note the alteration of the next meeting to May 17 and it is to be a visit to tho Community Centre at Feilding, commencing at 1.45 p.m.; a full attendance is requested, each member taking a plate for afternoon tea. TOKOMARU Mrs McNab jjresided over a good attendance. One new member was enrolled, Mrs Yates. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames L. Harper, G. Wenman, B. Hay, G. Gennings, L. Simpson, A. Boote, W. Pope, C. Laing and G. Bignal. The motto for the month was, “All of us are going to do better tomorrow, and we would, too, if only we started to-day.” Final arrangements were made concerning the birthday party, which is to take the form of a euchre party and dance. A paper competition was won by Mrs McNab and Mrs Tremaine. The competition for the three best ginger nuts resulted:— Mrs C. Osman 1, Mrs McNab 2, Mrs Lloyd 3. Hostesses were Mesdames C. Osman and S. Lloyd. The competition for May is for a pair of knitted booties. Hostesses are to be Mesdames Wenman and Bolstad. OHAKEA The monthly meeting was hold in tho 1 Ohakea Hall last week, Mrs W. Robinson presiding over a good attendance. Apologies for absence wero receiver! from Mrs Ben Frccklington and Mrs J. Ellery. Miss Audrey Capstick was proposed as a new junior member. After the business had been completed, Mrs J. H. Palmer gave a very interesting travel talk on a trip to England and Miss N. Capstick described her recent trip to the South Island. The reinain'ing part of the afternoon was spent in community singing, games and competitions which were much enjoyed by all. It was decided that as many members as possible travel to Feilding to attend a lecture in drama. Arrangements were made for a card and dance evening early next month. The competition for next month is a sugar bog cushion cover and plain scones. The competition for last month was a miniature garden, the winners being Mrs J. Capstick (seniors) 1 and Mrs S. Klatt 2; juniors, Miss Murray 1, Miss N. Capstick 2. Tho competition for the best bloom in the garden was won by Mrs A. Y. Mathews 1 and Mrs Frecklington 2 in the senior classes and Miss M. Tremain 1 and Miss N. Capstick 2 in the junior class. Mrs J. Murray proved the winner of a parcel game.
