COUNCIL NEGOTIATING WITH RAILWAY DEPARTMENT

In connection with the proposed ac quisition by the Palmerston North Citj | Council of land adjacent to the new | railway station for development purpoa jCs, the council confirmed on Mondax .night a resolution passed following . conference between its works committee and representatives of the Railway De partment. The resolution read:—

That the Railway Department be ad vised that the council desires to obtaii possession of an area of approximate!} 17 acres of private property facing Boundary Road and adjoining the pro posed site of the new' railway station together with an area of railway lam of approximately li acres abutting thereon, as shown on plans submittei to the department, and that the depart ment be requested to acquire suci private property under the provisious o 1 the Public Works Act, 1928, and to scl or transfer same to the council, togetk er with the area owned by the depart ment, on the following terms: — 1. That the private property be sol< to the council at the cost price th<

department, such price to be fixed by the Assessment Court if compensation is claimed by the present owners, and that council at cost price. 2. That the purchase price, with interest at Hie rate of four per cent annum, bo paid to the department by the council at the rate of £IOOO per annum, such payments to be applied firstly in payment of such interest computed by quarterly rests, and the balance on account of purchase money. 3. That the department construct the iwhole of the approach road shown on the plan without cost to the council. 4. That the department deposit all surplus spoil from the railway construction works (being not less than 20,000 yards) on the above areas free of cost to the council. 5. Should the council require more than the surplus spoil, necessitating additional excavation bv life department, the council to pay 2s per yard for the additional quantity taken out and deposited iu excess of 20,000 yards or the total quantity of surplus spoil, whichever is the greater. 6.
