Knocked Off Cycle Near Fitzherbert Bridge

YOUNG WOMAN SERIOUSLY INJURED Constance Hannam, a housemaid employed at Alassey College, was admitted to the Palmerston North Hospital last evening unconscious and in a serious condition as a result of injuries suffered when she was knocked off a bicycle on the south side of Fitzherbon bridge. What actually happened is not known but passing motorists noticed the young woman lying on one side of the road while her bicycle lay on the other side. Nearer the centre of the road was blood where she apparently first struck the bitumen. There was further blood whero she was found lying. Tho bicycle showed no very obvious signs of having been struck by anything though the full width of the road and a yard or two < more separated it from the victim of the accident. It was seen that Miss Hannam was very seriously hurt and the ambulance was summoned to convey her to hospital. Inquiries showed that she was cycling to town at the time. It was learnt from the hospital early this morning that Aliss Hannam was seriously ill, having suffered a fractured skull. She had undergone an operation. CROSSING SMASH HASTINGS, Last Night. Two occupants of a small car had a miraculous escape when their vehicle colllided with a train at Paulsen’s crossing near Takapau to-day. The car was carried for about 30 yards and completely wrecked, but the occupants, Aliss V. Frederickson, of Takapau, and Aliss Alollison, of Sydney, suffered only minor injuries. They were taken to the Waipukurau Hospital, where their condition was reported as satisfactory. CAR CRASHES THROUGH BRIDGE TWO PALMERSTON PEOPLE BADLY HURT DANNEVIRKE, April 26. A car in which several Palmerslonians were coming to Dannevirke from the coast went througli the rail of the approach to a small bridge, about three miles from Dannevirke, yesterday afternoon, and finished up on its side in a stream containing less than a couple of feet of water. The occupants comprised Air. and Airs. Ernest Williams and three members of their family —Air. B. Williams and the Misses Cynthia and Zonali Williams. The

father and son arc hairdressers. Mrs. Williams suffered a fractured shoulder blade, abrasions aud shock, aud Mr. Williams, Snr., concussion, abrasions, wounds to both hands and shock. Aliss Cynthia Williams received wounds to the left ear, Aliss Zouah Williams abrasions to the forehead and Mr. Williams, Jnr., minor abrasions, while the three arc also suffering from shock. The condition of the parents is reported to be serious.
