I Girls lor Factories I “Girls cannot be obtained for factory labour, no matter liow attractive a proposition is placed before them,” stated a clothing manufacturer in Dunedin when discussing the distinct shortage of female hands. Ho claimed that one factor was the declining birth rate, saying that there were fewer girls in the country than there were a few years ago. The increase of work in factories which has revealed this shortage of labour is largely attributable to the imposition of the import restrictions. Orders are pouring in for lines which formerly had been brought in from overseas, and at the present time the extent of orders being received is greater than the output. This applies in particular to woollen mills, which are very active.
