Gossip From THE Golf Courses

APRIL MEDAL HANDICAP AT HOKOWHITU^ O. H. WILLIAMS A 73 The first of the 1939 club competitions, the April medal handicap, was played at Hokowhitu on Saturday, and, although the conditions could have been improved upon, a big field “reported for duty.” The course was much slower than for some months and there was a fairly strong and bleak wind, but the scoring, taken right through, was good, the best round being that of O. H. Williams who completed in 73. fie is playing off the 1-handicap mark but his net 72 was only good enough to be second, the A grade winner being R. Duncalf, who returned a net 70. The leading cards were as under: —

A Good Card. O. H. Williams did not start too well, slipping a stroke at the first hole and another at the second. He dropped another at Strang’s, which was a very long hole against the wind, but from the fifth he commenced a brilliant sequence, being three under par for the next eight holes. He secured 3's at the eight, ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth, running down a long putt at the tenth and driving the green at the eleventh. His card read: Out: 55436453 3 —38 In 33355544 3—35 Williams’ sequence of five 3’s was beaten by Jack Mabey on Saturday, Mabey ‘ * spoiling’ ’ his “run” of five 3’s with a 2 instead of a 3 at one of the holes. Ngaio Amon was playing good golf during the week-end and one of his rounds was better than 75. Stapleford Bogey. The best scores in the Stapleford bogey handicap, played during the week-end, were as under:— J. Mabey 37 pts. K. N. Struthers 34 pts. V. Sutherland 33 pts. P. Barraud 33 pts. F. Guinness 32 pts. E. R. Chapman 31 pts. E. N. Cox 30 pts. PALMERSTON NORTH GOLF CLUB APRIL BOGEY The first official bogey was the chief event on the Awatapu course during the week-end. Playing conditions were good and several players treated the “Colonel” in no uncertain terms, although the majority were unable to better “his” consistency. R. W. Cumberworth was performing well over the week-end and the result was 3 up on bogey. Tipperary, the long 560-yard hole proved most troublesome to him and he had to be content with a 7. His card read: Out: 55534437 3—39 In: 55435534 5—39

The youthful players were again in prominence with R. B. Young and B. Murphy, both returning good cards of 2 up. No doubt the handicapper will deal with several of these players. Individual scores were:— A Grade R. W. Cumberworth .... 3 up D. A. Harkness 1 down E. Fletcher 2 down S. Toon 2 down A. W. Chapman ...... 3 down F. Ward 3 down L. de Cleene 4 down B Grade A. Kennedy 2 up B. Murphy 2 up R. B. Young 2 up A. Petersen 1 up B. Wilton 1 up T. E. Rose Square H. Smith Square P. Hutchins 2 down Points for the D. J. Rogers’ points trophy were allotted as follows: R. Cumberworth 3, A. Kennedy 2, B. Murphy 2, R. Young 2, A. Petersen li, B. Wilton li, T. E. Rose 3, H. Smith 3, D. Harkness i.

Next week-end the April Medal wil] be played.

sional, and A. Gibbs and Wight, two Otago amateurs, was played on the Balmacewen links on Saturday afternoon, but the performance of the round was that of Gibbs who took 69. The amateurs won the match 5 and 4, the professionals failing to win a hole. IN BETTER FORM AT INVERCARGILL INVERCARGILL, Last Night.
