Pahiatua-Makuri Dog Trials

FINAL OF RECORD EVENTS Four days were needed to complete the record entries in the PahiatuaMakuri dog trials. It was nearly Jive p.m. on Saturday when the president, Mr. J. Gibson, announced the winners of the final events. He also thanked the judge, Mr. A. Meikle, of Masterton, for his services, and Mrs. Beech, on whose property the trials were held. Thanks were also extended to Messrs. Bremner, Day and Bain for sheep supplied during the trials, Messrs. F. U. Ward and W. Lassen who acted as timekeepers, Mrs. Jones, who supplied the refreshments, Mr. Cotter who donated sheep for the judging, the donors of cups and trophies. All of these were given hoarty cheers. Mr. E. W. Eddie added thanks to Miss Gibson had knitted a pullover which had brought in to the club funds nearly £2. Mr. Gibson also had given sheep for competition. Cheers were also called for and heartily given. Commendation must go to the secretary, Mr. W. Bain, who so ably conducted the successful meeting. The following are the results:— Short head and yard (open): J. Tait’s Daylight, 58 points, 1; C. Wiffin’s Star, 57 points, 2; C. J. McDonald’s Jean, 54 points, 3; C. P. Hovard’s Cloud, 53 points, 4. Maiden: J. Smith’s Jan, 33 points, 1; Mrs. Hovard’s Jess, 31 points, 2; J. Gibson’s Flo, 30$ points, 3. Class 3, zig-zag hunt (open): S. Herbert’s Boy, 40 points, 1; F. Luscombe’s Claude, 39 points, 2; W. Smythe’s Sandy, 38 points, 3; R. Harman’s Tim, 37 points, 4.

Maiden: R. Harman’s Tim, 37 points, 1; C. Ferrick’s Tip, 35 points, 2; K. Hanson’s Tip, 344 points, 3. Straight hunt: T. Burgess’s Jock, 42 points, 1; P. Henrickson’s Dark, 40 points, 2; W. Falconer’s Glen, 37 points, 3; W. Bain’s Fly, 36 points, 4. Novice (Russ Merrie’s trophy): W. Clark’s Lass, 28 points, 1. Following are the cup competitions:— Barraclough Special: G. Thomson’s Speed. W. Smyth Cup: J. Tait’s Daylight. Brechin Rose Bowl: G. Thomson’s Speed. F. T. Horne Cup: J. Smith’s Jan. Stock Agents’ Cup: T. Burgess. Gordon Thomson Cup (zig zap hunt): S. Herbert.

E. W. Eddie Cup (local maiden heading dog): J. Smith’s Jan. The meeting was a credit to the officials for there were 29 open huntaway, 37 maiden huntaway and 23 straight hunt entries.
