SCHMELING TURNED DOWN BY MIKE JACOBS
AN UNKINDLY SNUB Max Sohmeling, the German heavyweight, who was hammered into defeat in one round by Joe Louis and afterwards had to spend a considerable time in hospital recovering from his hurts, has been unkindly snubbed by Jacobs, the American promoter, who has made a “corner” of the championship, writes a London correspondent. Schmeling went to America, we were told, for a holiday. He had no intention of fighting. For some weeks, however, he has tried to persuade Jacobs to give him another fight with Louis, and now he has received a most emphatic “no.” If Jacobs had thought that the German was a profitable proposition he would not have taken this view. He would have adopted the comparatively easy course of building him up again through a series of easy-to-win fights. As a matter of fact, he has turned down Schmellng owing to strong anti-German propaganda. But I do not think Schmeling will go into retirement. Already the strings are being pulled, and he may find it convenient to break his journey home in this country. Tommy Farr is here, preparing in Tonypandy for his match with Burman. He has, too, no intention at the moment of returning to America, and after his fight with Burman he will want another. So Schmeling is a possible opponent, and I understand that a big out-of-doors scrap for the summer is likely to be fixed up between the two men. These plans are, of course, based on the probability that Farr will defeat Burman.
