Bulls-Ohakea Sports

A POPULAR GATHERING The Bulls-Ohakea Sports Club held its annual athletic and cycling meeting ' at the Bulls Domain on Saturday after- J noon, and it attracted a large attend-1 ance of tho public. The fields were so large in some of the events that th/ee ( or four heats had to be run. Athletes were drawn from Wanganui, Feilding, Marton and Palmerston North. L. Burgess, tho West Coast sprint champion, made an appearance after being out of competition for some time with a pulled muscle. He finished third in the final of the 220 yards and was narrowly beaten for third place in the 440 yards, being the back-marker in both events. Airs. V. Rollerson (Kia Toa), the Alariawatu and West Coast woman sprint champion, won the 100 yard from scratch. The junior, Aliss J. Hill (Kia 1 Toa) won the 75 yards. The 16-year-old T. Harris, of Wanganui, won both the half-mile and mile. He is a very promising junior middledistance runner. J. Scott (Kia Toa) j was second in the half-mile. C. E. Barraud (Ivia Toa), the Manawatu 100 yards and 220 yards champion, won liis heat of the 100 yards decisively, but finished a yard back in the final. H. Essex (Palmerston North), rode his best race of the season to defeat G. Allen (Feilding) by a wheel in the twomile cycle race. INTER-CLUB CONTEST AT AIANAWATU CHAAIPIONSHIPS At Alanawatu sub-centre championships on Wednesday, February 15, the Kia Toa Club, for the second year in succession, secured tho majority of the points in the inter-club contest, winning nine first, nine seconds (including a second equal) and nine thirds. The Palmerston North Club won two firsts, two seconds and a third; Levin, two firsts, a second and a third; Feilding, two firsts and a second, and Foxton, three seconds and two thirds. The XDoints were scored as follow: Kia Toa 79 Palmerston North 17 Levin 15 Feilding 14 Foxton 11 Rivalry between the districts of Devonport and Takapuna apparently existed as long ago as ISB3, according to the minutes of the first meeting of the Takapuna Jockey Club, extracts from which were read by the secretary, Mr. R. A. Spinley, at a gathering in Devonport when tho club’s property was vested in the council. The minutes showed that a member had moved that the club should assume the name Takapuna, but the motion was Immediately followed by an amendment proposing Devonport as the name. Voting was even, and the title Takapuna was only adopted on the casting vote of the chairman.
