A sensational occurrence marred the running of the Frankton Hurdles at the opening of the Waikato races today when half the field came to grief in a crash which resulted in one horse ? being destroyed and several riders admitted to hospital. At the first fence Seven Seas fell and Star Artist, Donegal, Rozel, Aramis, Hopalong and Cyui- • cal Smile all came down. Cynical Smile broke a stifle and was destroyed. T. ] Fergus, rider of Seven Seas, sustained ' a brokeu leg, and T. Mcßrady, on ,Star . Artist, broko a collarbone. Hopalong , was lame wheu returning to the bird* . cage.
